Victoria Beckham is one of those people that ignite a sense of excitement reserved only for the most respectable women in fashion. London College of Fashion’s Rootstein Hopkins Space provided the perfect backdrop then for an exclusive, yet intimate chat.

 

Dressed in a signature black, knee-length ensemble of her own design and high heels Victoria evoked squeals, gasps and one unanimous agreement from the audience: she’s so very chic.

 

Gazing out into the full-to-capacity venue, she seemed genuinely appreciative at the turn out. “I can’t believe there’s that many people who want to hear what I have to say,” she laughs. Touching upon a broad range of subjects, from 12-hour flights to Los Angeles to that little group called The Spice Girls, Victoria returned to two things: her children and her work.

 

“I want to empower women,” she told the captivated audience, going on to explain how she delights in getting to know her customer. She’s very hands on you see, is Victoria Beckham. One thing she’s proud to share with the students at LCF is the humble beginnings of her eponymous label. A pared-down affair, Victoria’s first collection debuted at New York’s Waldorf Hotel, with the designer choosing to arrange the flowers herself – which is just as well, as Hilary Alexander mentioned them at the very start of her show review.

 

When asked by student, Francesca Ulanoff, whether she thought her ‘celebrity status’ helped or hindered her decision to forge a career in fashion, Victoria proved she’s got those towering heels firmly rooted in the ground. “People had their preconceptions,” she acknowledged, “but ‘fame’ gives you a voice.”

 

Ever since her schoolgirl days, spent customising her uniform, Victoria Beckham knew she wanted to work in fashion. However, there’s one other subject that causes her to light up every time it’s mentioned – her family. Mother to four children and wife to footballer, David Beckham, Victoria is a shining example of those women who seem to have it all. However, charming as ever, Victoria insisted she’s no different to any other Mum out there. “It’s not just tough for me,” she says. “It’s hard for every working mum.”

 

Charis Koh, who studies BA (Hons) Fashion Management, attended the talk and was in awe of Victoria’s positive outlook on life. “I often wonder how she does it,” Charis said, “She’s inspirational; she’s so successful and she has a family.”

 

Effortlessly funny and down-to-earth Victoria Beckham is everything you want the woman designing your clothes to be.
