10. The New Kid on the Block: Esmod Berlin, International University of Fashion

Esmod Berlin has recently launched its Masters Programme of Sustainability in Fashion this Fall. The 12-month program, beginning in the winter semester, offers students an internationally oriented masters degree focusing on ecological, social and economic sustainability. Reserved for only a select number of students.

 

9. The California Cool: Otis College of Art & Design, Los Angeles

 

If you prefer to combine a little sun and sustainability then Otis might be the answer. The school is just beginning to integrate sustainability into its curriculum by offering a Sustainability Minor that fulfills the school’s Liberal Arts and Sciences requirements. As part of the Fashion Major, design students can take the Introduction to Green Materials and Sustainable Design class as an elective. In addition to classwork, Otis recently completed Phase 1 (2003-2010) of its sustainability plan, which emphasized the integration of the triple bottom line (Profit, People, and Planet) into the business of fashion. Let’s see what’s in store for Phase 2.

 

8. The Grande Dame: University of the Arts London, Central Saint Martins College of Art & Design

 

It’s hard to go wrong with Central Saint Martins  one of the most highly regarded schools for fashion design in the world. Be sure to check out the short courses in the program, which are often taught by London-based designers focused on sustainability.

 

7. The Sleeper: Pratt Institute, Fashion Design

 

Pratt may not always be in the fashion design news but they offer a number of peripheral programs that are integrating sustainability in both in and out of the classroom. The Pratt Design Incubator for Sustainable Innovation was launched in 2002 to help launch and grow socially- and environmentally-minded enterprises. Additionally, friend of Source4Style and Director of the Pratt Center - Adam Friedman - has done quite a bit of research on promoting sustainable development and local manufacturing, particularly within the apparel sector.

 

6. The Ivy League: Cornell University, Fiber Science & Apparel Design

 

Cornell University’s College of Human Ecology offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in Fiber Science & Apparel Design. This research-based, multidisciplinary department only selects around two dozen applicants every year. Professors range from environmental toxicologists to fiber scientists and chemists, giving students an entirely new take on design. Take a course in Sustainable Industry Practices, Sustaining Global Apparel Supply Chains, or Agriculture in Developing Nations.

 

5. The Hipster: Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT)

 

If you are in New York City, check out FIT’s Sustainable Design Entrepreneurs Workshop Series, which was offered for the first time this past Spring through the School of Continuing Education. You can take individual courses such as Ethical Fashion, Materials and Eco-Labels, and Responsible Manufacturing and Product Lifecycle. You can also take these courses as part of the Sustainable Design Entrepreneur Certificate, which requires 4 core courses and any 2 specialization courses.

 

4. The Trailblazer: California College of the Arts (CCA)

 

CCA was one of the progenitors of a sustainable fashion curriculum, thanks to the likes of Lynda Grose, member of the design faculty and a major force for sustainable design. In addition, the school has engaged in a myriad of creative projects including the New Materials Resource Center. The school is also listed on Princeton Review’s Top 311 Green Schools.

 

3. The Risk-Taker: Parsons The New School for Design, School of Fashion 

 

Parsons prides itself in offering a top-notch program for Fashion Design, calling everyone from Donna Karan to Doo Ri as alumni from the prestigious school. Currently Parsons offers a Sustainable Fashion course and has recently hired Timo Rissanen as Assistant Professor in Fashion Design and Sustainability. Creative collaborations are always taking place - from collaborations with AirDye to hosting Eco Chic - Towards Sustainable Fashion exhibit and symposium. While at Parsons, you can also participate in the Sustainable Design Review, a student and faculty group dedicated to bringing awareness to environmental and social issues.

 

2. The Future Force: University of Delaware, Fashion & Apparel Studies

 

Since 2008, the University of Delaware has integrated sustainability topics more consistently throughout their Fashion & Apparel Studies programs. For those needing to work remotely, U of Delaware also offers an online Graduate Certificate program in Socially Responsible and Sustainable Apparel Business. The program addresses labor and environmental issues in the global supply chains of the apparel, textile and footwear industries. Students choose to follow the labor or environment track. The certificate program consists of seven core courses and two electives for each track. Professors from Cornell University, Colorado State University, and the University of Delaware collaboratively teach the courses.

 

1. The Creme de la Creme: University of the Arts, London College of Fashion

 

Not only does the Centre for Sustainable Design offer the first MA in Fashion & the Environment but they also hold the first international competition for sustainable design students called Fashioning the Future. The Centre has collaborated on projects with Forum for the Future and DEFRA on the Sustainable Clothing Roadmap.
