Anthony Ward
Anthony Ward is a Tony and Olivier award-winning theatre designer whose critically acclaimed work spans the worlds of theatre, opera and dance. He was appointed an Honorary Fellow of the University of Arts London in 2014.
Specialising in set and costume design, he has worked for the Royal Shakespeare Company, National Theatre, Donmar Warehouse, Royal Opera House, Opera North and Royal Ballet.
His many awards include the 2009 Tony Award for Best Costume Design of a Play for Phyllida Lloyd's Broadway production of Mary Stuart, following its transfer from the West End, the 1996 Olivier Award for Set Design (Oklahoma!), and the 1999 Olivier Award for Costume Design for Midsummer Night's Dream, La Grande Magia and The Way of the World.
Born in 1957, Anthony studied theatre design at Wimbledon School of Art. He designed Assassins, Oliver and King Lear for Sam Mendes, My Fair Lady for Trevor Nunn at the National Theatre and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang for Adrian Noble at the London Palladium and Sweeney Todd and Gypsy for Jonathan Kent.
He also designed Matthew Bourne's Nutcracker! for Sadler's Wells and UK Tour, and Gloriana and Peter Grimes for Phyllida Lloyd at Opera North.
