Lady Gaga caused a stir when she wore a dress made of meat to the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards, and now a British designer has taken a leaf out of the flamboyant singer’s book by designing a gown from sushi.

The dress, by Central Saint Martin’s College of Art and Design graduate George Nemsadze, is made from nori, the seaweed paper which is a staple in sushi.

The designer used fifty sheets of vivid green pressed seaweed and silk organza for the creation and incorporated geometric patterning and sheer panelling.

The beautiful sheen and colour of the nori is very Spring/Summer 2013. We saw earth and jewel tones in Spring/Summer 2012 collections which rolled on through autumn and winter and into Spring/Summer 2013 in several collections,’ says Nemsadze.

The dress was created in collaboration with Pan-Asian restaurant Chino Latino to mark London Fashion Week, which begins on September 14, and will be on display in the lobby of the dining venue at the Park Plaza Riverbank until September 18.

‘Fashion week in London is a time to celebrate all that is beautiful, from designer creations and street fashion to city architecture and well-executed cuisine,’ says Albert van der Westhuizen, Chino Latino Brand Manager for Park Plaza Hotels & Resorts.

We wanted to mark Fashion Week by commissioning a London designer to create a fusion piece where food meets fashion.’

Of course, this isn’t the first time sushi has been used as a substitute for clothes.

Fans of Sex and The City will no doubt recall that Samantha Jones, played by Kim Cattrall, strips off and covers herself in sashimi as a Valentines Day treat for her partner Smith in the first movie spin-off of the popular sitcom.

Meanwhile Lady Gaga was heavily criticised by animal rights campaigners after donning the infamous meat dress, but later said that she was making a political statement.

'Well, it’s certainly no disrespect to anyone that’s vegan or vegetarian….I, as you know, am the most judgment-free human being on Earth,' she explained during an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show.

'However, it has many interpretations — but for me this evening it’s that if we don’t stand up for what we believe in, if we don’t fight for our rights, pretty soon we’re gonna have as much rights as the meat on our bones. And I am not a piece of meat.
